7. Authoring with CALI Author

CALI Author has two modes—viewing and authoring. Students running the lesson use Viewing mode, which displays the lesson using Flash. Lesson authors use Authoring mode, which also has an option to view the lesson while you edit it by clicking on the Student Tab (see below). To add content and questions to your lesson you must enter authoring mode.

Author Mode

To enter Authoring mode, select View and the Authoring from the pull down menu. Alternately, you may toggle between Viewing and Authoring modes by pressing F3 on your keyboard (F3 is in the function keys at the top of the keyboard). Once you enter the authoring mode you will see the screen below. If you assigned a password to the lesson, you will be asked for the password before you may enter authoring mode. Or, if you are modifying a lesson that you downloaded from the CALI website, you will be prompted for a password. Please contact Deb Quentel for the password to modify any existing CALI lesson.

All your work will be done in this mode. There are two parts of Authoring Mode: the Book View (on the left-hand side) and the Page View (on the right hand side). The Book View holds the lesson tree showing all the pages created. Clicking on the Plus sign will cause that section to expand. In the example above, the Plus sign has been expanded for the Menu Heading 'Multimedia,' and 'Click on Image.' Displayed beneath the heading Click on Image are all the pages linked in a linear manner in that section. We'll talk more later about pages that may be part of this section, but that don't appear in this linear listing when we discuss branching. (The Alphabetical branch of the lesson tree shows all pages created, while the Contents branch of the lessons tree shows all pages created and used ("linked") in the current lesson). The Page View displays the question/page selected in the Book View in 3 different ways.

Student Tab

The Student Tab shows the lesson author how the lesson will look to the student running the lesson. If you were to leave authoring mode, you would see the entire display window. This view allows the lesson author to see and interact with the lesson exactly like the student does. All navigation buttons at the top of CALI Author remain fully functional in Authoring Mode.

Report Tab

The Report Tab shows a textual representation of the page or lesson. This tab displays the current page with all options/question text/answers/and other page information. Faculty may print this page to have a hard-copy version of the lesson. An example of a report is below. Report mode is not the most efficient way to print the entire lesson. Instead, select File/Save HTML Report and print the HTML report, as you would any other web document.

Edit Tabs

In addition to the Student and Report Tabs there are several tabs which allow you to edit the contents of the page. These include Page Information, Question text, Choices for the questions, Responses for the question and Hints.

Authors use these tabs to create questions and answers; to flag answers as correct/incorrect; and to move the student through the lesson by calling the next page or branching to a specific page if a specific answer has been chosen.

When editing text you will be able to do text formatting (Bold, Italics, and Underlined), tables, images, and hyperlink insertion (links to another lesson/book page, popup page, or web site).
