11. Creating a Lesson with Pages

A lesson is a series of pages that are put together in a particular order. Pages are added by clicking the Add page button in the page menu. The page will be added below (after) the active page. CALI Author will default to running pages in the order they appear in the page menu, although the order of pages can be later modified.

When you create a new page you are asked to define the page name and what type of page it will be. The page name can be generic (e.g., Question 2) or more detailed (e.g., "Q1 on Trade Dress Basics"). If you plan on creating a complex lesson with branching (showing a particular question based upon a previous response) or other advanced techniques, then detailed page names will help keep track of actual question content.

Each page in CALI Author has unique attributes and properties that vary with the page type and purpose (e.g., menu pages vs. multiple choice pages). Each page's properties (text, answers, actions, etc.) are edited using the property tabs in the top of the Page View. The image below shows the property tab 'Response' for a multiple-choice "List of choices" page with four possible responses:

To modify the response for any of the four choices, simply click on the letter tab of the choice. You will notice that each response can be set to one of three actions - (1) Show feedback and return to question; (2) Show feedback then branch to this page: [where a page is designated after clicking on this option] ; and (3) Just branch directly to this page: [again, where a page is designated after clicking on this option]. These three actions are explored in the manual under creating branches.
