RCRA Hazardous Wastes

This is an overview of the ways in which wastes become designated as "hazardous wastes" under the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), emphasizing the EPA's regulations governing RCRA hazardous wastes. Students should complete the CALI lesson on RCRA "Solid Wastes" before completing this lesson.

This lesson can serve either as an introduction to RCRA hazardous wastes or as a review of that subject after it has been covered in an Environmental Law or Hazardous Waste course. It also provides experience in reading EPA RCRA regulations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the lesson, the student will be able to:

1. Analyze some of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that identify hazardous wastes for purposes of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).

2. Discuss the "mixture rule."

3. Explain the "derived-from rule."
